4. Ideation + Innovation for Busy Leaders

IMG_5893.JPG

I've found that high-level leaders often LACK:

1) the time and mental space to sit down and play with possibilities,

2) a way to access and utilize their own creative resources (they are in there! I promise!),

3) the willingness to sit in a space where they "don't know" and don't have to "get it right" on the very first try, and

4) the ability to remain curious and not jump immediately to THE HOW, where the delicate seedlings of great ideas die.

I get it. Most companies are not paying the CEO big bucks to say "Gee, I don't know!"

The conundrum is that CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION ARE KEY SKILLS that leaders must embody in these rapidly-shifting times. And to access these skills, one must (at least temporarily...) live in a space of The Unknown. So I help leaders discover and work out their creativity muscle, which is often nonexistent in their MBA training and job experience.

I love working visually with leaders to play with ideas and explore possibilities in an open space (ahhhhh) so they can get clear on their own thoughts and concepts before being forced to share them with others. It's so satisfying to loosen up and even go to far out places, where we often experience breakthroughs in thinking and discover hidden options. It's also great to prepare leaders for communicating their ideas out to their peers and teams for discussion and refinement.

I create a safe, nonjudgmental space where anything is possible, and my coaching skills help leaders gently identify and bust through their own limiting beliefs and constraints. I love ending a session when a leader is totally jazzed (!!) about what they came up with, excited about what's next, and feeling extremely confident bringing their concepts to others.

The above sketch is an example of work I did with a CEO who wanted to explore options for reconfiguring the company divisions. This was mid-way through the process of several sessions. (NOTE: all identifying information has been re-drawn to honor client privacy...)
